What is Primary Sports Funding?
The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for academic years 2013 to 2014 and 2014 to 2015 to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding - provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport - will be allocated to primary school headteachers.
This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.
How will the funding be spent?
At Lee Mount Primary School we are proud to provide all of our children with at least two hours of high quality PE. Alongside curriculum PE we offer our children an extensive range of extra-curricular activities.
Since its inception, PE and Sport Premium funding has been used to employ experts to upskill all of our teaching staff, enabling us to provide ongoing excellence in PE. Each half term, a specialist (shadowed by the class teacher) leads a one hour lesson per class for six sessions.
We have formed close links with a number of sports clubs and organisations.
Our excellence in PE has been recognised by Sainsbury's School Games, being one of only three primary schools in Calderdale to achieve Gold standard.
Intra School Sports
Sport is a key component of our curriculum at Lee Mount and we believe every child should have a rounded physical development. We also believe that every pupil should have the opportunity to compete and enjoy taking part in class/ school competitions to develop their understanding of being a team player and how PE forms an essential part of being a healthy citizen.
Throughout the year children take part in the following class competitions: Dance Competition, Fun Run, Talent Show, Sports Day, School Games Day, Class competition in a variety of sports.
PE has always been a high priority at Lee Mount Primary School and has a ring-fenced element in the school budget. Last year the ring-fenced amount equated to £9093. Total funding for PE including PE grant 2014 - 2015 £14,939.
The School Games Gold Award
The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competitions across their school and into the community. Schools in England are assessed across bronze, silver and gold levels of quality mark. Each year we have improved our award from bronze (2013-2014) up to Gold (2014-2015), a great achievement!
Only the top 5% of schools achieve GOLD and can demonstrate that pupils have the widest range of clubs and activities in which to participate. At Lee Mount we feel our Gold award is the result of the high level of commitment and progress from out pupils and all the teaching staff.
